I spent twenty wonderful years working as an in-house editor at illustrious publishing houses including Grove Press, Random House, and Simon & Schuster, where I worked with bestselling authors of both fiction and nonfiction, including Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark, Anne Rule, Jeffery Deaver, Wendell Berry, Tracy Kidder, Edward M. Hallowell, MD, and many others.

As an independent editor, I bring my in-house experience to my clients, working with them to hone their craft and bring their stories from concept to bound book.

I edit both fiction (women’s fiction, thrillers, mysteries, general) and nonfiction (health, memoir, history, narrative, biography).

My services include developmental editing and line-editing; editorial project management for trade publishers; book proposal development; writing coaching; publishing consulting and collaborative writing.

As a collaborative/ghost writer, I’ve had nine books published by the “big 5” houses, including Viking, HarperCollins, S&S, and Random House.

Professional Affiliations: Authors Guild, Women’s Media Group.

A former Executive Editor at Pocket Books and the co-author of some nine books, Emily was incisive in her critiques of the evolving proposal, creative in her suggestions, and enthusiastic in her support. She had a powerful role in shaping this book. In the process, she also became a close friend.

Emily Heckman, a freelance editor of impeccable skill and straight talk, was my field training officer. She didn’t pull any punches, and that has made all the difference.
